This idea came to me during COVID 19 times. My daughter had her eight birthday, and I wondered how easy life is in the 21st century. Basically, except large purchases like home or car, everything else was pretty much accessible any time we need it. So, when the birthday or Christmas comes, we are in a lucky situation that my kids have pretty much everything, and I try to come up with what else you can get for them that would be exciting... And right then, I realized that when my mom wants to get something for me, I always say, please bring some homemade jam or pickles. For us, it is mostly about the gifts that require time commitment more than anything. This is because we have no time in this modern life to make these excellent food products... Go figure, with all these nifty gadgets to make our life easier. We have less time than ever. So, I kept thinking about what it is I could give my daughter that would make it super special and last for her lifetime and beyond... And suddenly, I thought about yeast. These days we bake our bread because we don't want to go to stores... Thus, I hopped on the computer and did some research, and sure enough, some families cultivate their yeast for more than 100 years. You can read a lovely story about Paula Owen's family yeast that inspired me. Click here. I decided to give my daughter a yeast starter that I hope she will pass on to her kids. Along with that, I gave her a book about baking bread. And to make it even more special, I bought an art card with this fantastic yeast picture by Gene Cox. Click here to view it. I wrote a beautiful birthday card, attached it to the jar and the rest is now history. Hopefully a new family tradition evolves.
