With technology as popular and widely used as it is, it often can appear as thought kids and parents respectively spend more time interacting with their family members online rather than in person — even household ones! Having set daily routes can help you grow closer to your family members, regardless of age, and they don’t need to be chores. They can be fun and so under the radar that you’ll be bonding in real life without even realizing it!
4 tips for prioritizing family time with daily routines
Even when life gets busy, there are a few tips that you can use to always help make family time on a daily basis. This promotes family bonding but doesn’t make it invasive emotionally or even on time!
Make the dinner table family time: Whether it’s enjoying a sit-down family dinner around the table, or burgers at a picnic table, or even a “free for all” night, try to make sure that the main meal of the day (typically supper) is spent together. No phones, no interruptions. It should be time spent eating and relaxing together as family unit. Natural discussion topics can come up and it can be a great way for parents and kids of all ages to connect!
Making bedtime loving and kind: After the age of 10, bedtimes often fall to the wayside. No matter the age, it’s a great idea to always show up to send your kids off to bed even as they get older. Sure, it may not be snuggles and a story, but it’s a great idea to always have some sort of catchphrase to signal that it’s bedtime. It allows for daily ways for our kids to know that you love them, and vice versa even when going through fights.
Have a special handshake: From simple fist bumps or winter taps, to fancy complicated handshakes, these are great ways to help physically connect with each other. Maybe each sibling could have a special one with Mom and Dad and each sibling could have a unique handshake with each other, too! Even when things in the family may be hard or tense, secret handshakes always give the warm fuzzies.
Have a fun family-friendly car game: From Eye Spy to Truth or Dare to a made up game, games in the car can be fun, humorous and filled with all sorts of great conversations. It doesn’t matter that it’s the daily school run or a quick zip to the grocery store, it’s great bonding time and can help make mundane tasks much easier.
Daily routines don’t have to be all about practicality. In fact, many are missed opportunities to bond with our closest members and help create lasting memories and traditions on a daily basis.
